Thread galling prevention: (1) Use anti-seize compound on threads, (2) Don’t overtighten, (3) Use proper torque wrench, (4) Clean threads before mating, (5) Replace damaged threads immediately. Titanium is prone to galling without proper lubrication.

What is Thread Galling?
Galling is a form of wear where metal surfaces seize due to friction and pressure. Titanium is especially susceptible because:
- Protective oxide layer breaks down under friction
- Bare metal welds to itself under pressure
- Once started, galling accelerates rapidly
- Can permanently damage connector threads
Prevention Methods
1. Anti-Seize Compound
- Nickel-based: Best for titanium (e.g., Loctite LB 8150)
- Copper-based: Good alternative
- PTFE-based: For lower temperatures
- Apply to: Male threads only, thin coat
2. Proper Torque
| Connector Size | Recommended Torque |
|---|---|
| Small (CBH) | 15-20 Nm |
| Medium (BH) | 25-35 Nm |
| Large (MM) | 40-50 Nm |
| Extra Large | 60-80 Nm |
3. Installation Technique
- Clean both male and female threads
- Apply anti-seize to male threads
- Hand-tighten first (ensure proper alignment)
- Use torque wrench to final specification
- Don’t exceed torque – more is NOT better
If Galling Occurs
- Stop immediately – don’t force it
- Back off slowly – reverse rotation
- Clean threads – remove debris
- Inspect damage – replace if severe
- Re-lubricate – before retry
