Perform visual inspection, continuity test, insulation resistance test, and low-pressure air test. For critical applications, do a shallow water test first. Document all tests. Never skip pre-deployment testing on new or repaired connectors.
Pre-Deployment Test Checklist
1. Visual Inspection
- ✅ Check for physical damage
- ✅ Verify O-rings are seated properly
- ✅ Inspect threads for debris
- ✅ Confirm locking mechanism functions
- ✅ Check cable strain relief
2. Continuity Test
- Use multimeter to verify each pin connection
- Check for open circuits
- Verify correct pin-to-pin mapping
- Document readings for future reference
3. Insulation Resistance Test
- Test between each pin and shell
- Test between adjacent pins
- Expected: >100 MΩ (megohms)
- Use insulation tester (megger) if available
4. Low-Pressure Air Test
- Pressurize connector to 1-2 bar
- Submerge in water briefly
- Look for air bubbles (indicates leak)
- Hold pressure for 1-2 minutes
Shallow Water Test (Recommended)
For critical deployments:
- Connect to non-critical test equipment
- Submerge in pool or shallow water (1-2m)
- Monitor for 15-30 minutes
- Check for water ingress or signal issues
- Retrieve and inspect
Test Documentation
Record for each connector:
- Connector serial number
- Date of test
- Test results (pass/fail)
- Inspector name
- Next test due date
Test Frequency
| Situation | Testing Required |
|---|---|
| New connector | Full test before first use |
| After repair | Full test before reuse |
| After long storage | Visual + electrical test |
| Regular use | Visual before each dive |
| Periodic | Full test every 6 months |
