What is the difference between wet mate and dry mate connectors?

Hurtigt svar

Wet mate connectors can be connected and disconnected underwater, designed for ROV operations and diver interventions. Dry mate connectors must be connected in dry conditions only, typically used in permanently installed or pressure-housed applications. Wet mate connectors are more complex and expensive due to their pressure-compensated, water-blocking design.

Wet Mate Connectors

Key Characteristics

  • Underwater mating: Designed to connect/disconnect while submerged
  • Pressure compensation: Oil-filled or elastomer-compensated to prevent water ingress
  • Self-sealing: Automatic valves seal each contact when unmated
  • ROV operable: Can be manipulated by ROV manipulators
  • Depth ratings: Typically 100m to 6000m+

Anvendelser

  • ROV tool changes and extensions
  • Subsea sensor deployments
  • Temporary underwater installations
  • Diver-operated equipment
  • Underwater lighting systems

Advantages

  • No need to recover equipment to surface for connection
  • Enables modular subsea systems
  • Reduces operational downtime

Limitations

  • Higher cost (2-5x dry mate connectors)
  • More complex maintenance requirements
  • Limited pin count compared to dry mate
  • Requires regular inspection of sealing surfaces

Dry Mate Connectors

Key Characteristics

  • Dry connection only: Must be mated in dry environment
  • Static sealing: O-ring or gasket seals around connector body
  • Once installed: Typically not disconnected underwater
  • Lower cost: Simpler design and manufacturing
  • Higher pin density: Can accommodate more contacts

Anvendelser

  • Permanent subsea installations
  • Pressure vessel penetrations
  • Underwater housings and enclosures
  • Cable terminations in dry compartments
  • Subsea control modules

Advantages

  • Lower cost
  • Higher reliability for static applications
  • Wider range of configurations
  • Easier to maintain and inspect

Limitations

  • Cannot be disconnected underwater
  • Requires dry environment for installation
  • Not suitable for frequently reconfigured systems
