What is Thread Galling?

Galling is a form of wear where metal surfaces seize due to friction and pressure. Titanium is especially susceptible because:

  • Protective oxide layer breaks down under friction
  • Bare metal welds to itself under pressure
  • Once started, galling accelerates rapidly
  • Can permanently damage connector threads

Prevention Methods

1. Anti-Seize Compound

  • Nickel-based: Best for titanium (e.g., Loctite LB 8150)
  • Copper-based: Good alternative
  • PTFE-based: For lower temperatures
  • Apply to: Male threads only, thin coat
