When and why should I use Dummy Plugs?

You should install Dummy Plugs (Blanking Plugs) whenever the connector is unmated, whether during storage or transit. They serve two vital purposes: protecting the rigid pins/contacts from physical impact and preventing the exposed surfaces from accumulating dust, grease, or salt spray.

Think of a Dummy Plug as a “Helmet” for your connector.

  • Protection: A dropped bulkhead without a dummy plug often results in bent pins, rendering the entire ROV unusable until replaced.
  • Sealing: For bulkheads installed on an ROV, a pressure-rated Dummy Plug allows the vehicle to be submerged even if that specific port is not being used (e.g., diving without the sonar attached).
