Why use Marine Bronze (Aluminum Bronze) for some connectors?

Marine Bronze (C63000) is the material of choice for shallow, warm waters with high biological activity. Copper-based alloys have natural anti-biofouling properties that prevent barnacles and algae from attaching to the connector shell, which could otherwise jam the locking sleeve or block the mating face.

Biofouling is a major issue for sensors deployed in the “Photic Zone” (sunlight zone).

  • Natural Biocide: The copper ions in the bronze are toxic to marine larvae, preventing hard growth (barnacles) from establishing.
  • Durability: Aluminum Bronze is exceptionally tough and resistant to erosion-corrosion, making it suitable for sand-laden currents.
  • Application: Widely used in coastal environmental monitoring buoys and port security sonar systems.
