What causes intermittent signal loss (flickering video)?

Intermittent faults are usually caused by Cable Fatigue (broken copper strands inside the insulation) near the connector boot. To diagnose, perform a Continuity Test with a multimeter while wiggling the cable at the boot. If the beep stops or resistance jumps, the internal conductor is broken.

Copper work-hardens and breaks over time.

  • Flex Failure: This happens if the cable was bent too sharply or pulled repeatedly.
  • Contact Fretting: It could also be due to loose contacts (worn-out spring sockets). Check if the male pin feels loose when inserted.
  • Solution: A broken internal wire cannot be fixed reliably. The cable must be re-terminated (shortened) or replaced.
